Salsa Stories are sweet, fun, touching, evocative tales full of colorful, real-life characters. As someone who has occasionally gone to salsa classes, and acro-dance lessons, been to a social or two, this is eye-opening into the whole world that is the Salsa universe, its characters, its ethos, its heart, its passion and drama! I love the varied people, the humor, including much endearing self-awareness in humor, and the grit and soul that the journey opens up to readers. I feel like I got to "visit" and glimpse inside first-hand, this grand period and scene; but there's more than that. It isn't just stories. There is an overall story of growth, passion, joy, agony, expansion. There is transcendence over ego, over fears and setbacks, over limitations, physical and imaginary. There is overall a pure joy, rhythm, and love for giving back to the world, that pulses through the book, and its characters like a dance itself. I also loved reading about the author's passion for bringing salsa to children in middle schools, and how it is meeting so many of the children's needs, such as for movement, self-expression, self-connection, freedom, connection and joy.

The author’s immense passion for salsa is palpable and made me want to get out on the dance floor! So inspiring to understand the many obstacles he overcame in pursuit of this passion. You have to watch the videos too!

50 Salsa Stories is not just a book about dance—it’s a memoir about belonging, failure, resilience, and joy, told through the lens of the salsa floor. Each story is intimate, honest, and often disarmingly funny, revealing how movement becomes a language for identity and healing. The combination of vivid storytelling and expressive artwork creates a reading experience that feels almost kinetic. You don’t need to be a dancer to feel the heartbeat of this book.

Alicia Johnson United States

This book captures the soul of salsa culture in a way few outsiders ever could. David Paris writes with humility and reverence for the teachers, partners, rivals, and communities that shaped him, while never shying away from his own missteps. The stories mirror the arc of so many dancers’ lives—awkward beginnings, ego, heartbreak, transcendence, and return. It’s a love letter to the dance floor and the people who make it sacred.

Zoe Klein United States

What makes 50 Salsa Stories so compelling is how universal the lessons are. Beneath the spins, lifts, and performances are stories about being seen, chasing respect, letting go of perfection, and finding peace in imperfection. The book moves effortlessly between humor and profundity, making it both entertaining and deeply human. It’s a reminder that the places we struggle the most often become the places where we find ourselves.
